What Are Fairway Woods and What Are They Used For?
Fairway Woods are versatile, designed to help you achieve long, accurate shots from a variety of lies on the course. Unlike drivers, which are mainly used off the tee, fairway woods are engineered to be effective from the fairway, rough, or even off the tee in certain situations. They feature a larger club head than irons but are smaller than drivers, offering a nice balance between distance and control.
Fairway Woods typically come in lofts ranging from 15 - 25 degrees, allowing golfers to hit shots with varying trajectories, whether you’re looking for a high launch and soft landing on the green, or a lower, penetrating flight for more roll.
Choosing the Right Fairway Wood for Your Game
When selecting a fairway wood, one of the key decisions is choosing between a 3-wood, 5-wood, and 7-wood. These clubs all differ primarily in loft and length, which will affect their performance on the course. Whether you’re looking to add distance to your shots or gain better control, understanding the distinctions between these fairway woods is essential to making the right choice.
3-Wood
- Loft: Typically around 13-15 degrees
- Use Case: With a lower loft, the 3-wood is designed for longer shots and is often used off the tee when you need more control than a driver can provide, or from the fairway for maximum distance. Its lower loft provides a lower ball flight, which can be advantageous in windy conditions or for hitting par 5 greens in 2.
5-Wood
- Loft: Typically around 17-19 degrees
- Use Case: The 5-wood offers a balance between distance and control, making it a favourite for many golfers. The higher loft and shorter shaft provides more accuracy and a higher ball flight, making it easier to land softly on the green. This is great for approach shots from the fairway or light rough, or even off the tee for more controlled, mid-range shots.
7-Wood
- Loft: Typically around 21-23 degrees
- Use Case: The 7-wood is known for its ease of use and ability to get the ball airborne quickly. The higher loft means less distance but more control, making it ideal for approach shots to the green where precision is key.
When selecting a fairway wood, consider your playing style, typical course conditions, and trajectory and distance needs. If distance is your main goal, the 3-wood is your go-to. If you’re looking for a mix of distance and control, consider the 5-wood. Or for those who need more height and accuracy, the 7-wood is your perfect match.
