Drivers Clubs

If you are looking to hit the golf ball far, you’ll be pulling out your driver. They are designed to produce great distance. They tend to be the longest club but have the lowest loft out of any golf club. A driver is an essential club for every golfer at every level before they head to the course. When looking to buy a driver, there are many different aspects to consider. Firstly, is picking a club that matches your skill level. An inexperienced player with a golf club that is out of their depth, won’t allow for the player to learn or perfect their swing. Other aspects are the different features of a driver, including the size and shape of a club head, shaft flexibility, loft and overall adjustability.

Thing to consider before buying a Driver

Skill Level

More skilled and regular golf players may find that they need to upgrade to a new driver as their swing improves. However, whatever your skill, it is important to find a suitable driver that matches well with your swing. You are also looking for a club that helps prevent errors or simple bad swing habits you may be falling into. Heading down to your closest Golf Clearance Outlet store, one of our knowledgeable staff will be able to help you pick a driver with features that work best for you. Whatever your skill levels, a club designed to address your swing habits will always improve your game. All of our stores have a hi-tech hitting bay that will give you accurate data on how your clubs are going. Our staff will be more than happy to make sure you are buying the best option for your game.

Head Size

The club head has a larger face and is designed to have the weight fall into the lower back of the club head. This design has been proven to increase momentum and help launch the ball into the air, creating more ball speed. Large club heads are also the most forgiving, having a larger sweet spot than smaller club heads -and are, therefore, a good choice for amateur and less-skilled players. The maximum allowed size is 460cc. This is now the most common driver size on the market, used by the world’s best players and beginners alike.

Head Shape

From a pure performance standpoint, it is important that you choose a driver that you feel most comfortable swinging. A driver with a rounder club head is the best option if you are a beginner, they are less clunky making them less likely to get caught on the ground before ball impact. As your swing speed increases, your ball speed should also increase and you will cover more distance down the fairway. Square club heads have drastically decreased in popularity, many golfers dislike them due to their poor aesthetic and the quality of the design. They also tended to make a dull sound at impact which golfers find unappealing.

Shaft Flexibility

Flex on a shaft is determined by how much the shaft will bend during the swing. Players with fast swing speeds gravitate toward stiffer shafts, while golfers with a slower swing speed tend to benefit from a more flexible shaft . More modern golf club shafts tend to be lighter and longer than in the past. Golfers need to experiment with different shafts to find out what is the right amount of flexibility for them. As always, get in-store or call us for advice. We’ll always do our best to help with the right selection.

Frequently asked questions

What is a driver golf club used for?

A driver golf clubs are most commonly used on par 4 or 5 tee shots and are designed to hit the ball a great distance. It is typically the longest club found in a golf bag and also sports the biggest head of any club. The overall goal for the driver is to get the ball as far as possible towards the green. How often should I buy a new driver? This really depends on how regularly you play golf. For most golfers, it is recommended that you replace your driver every five years. If you treat your driver well, there is no reason it cannot last a very long time, even if you are a very frequent golfer. Buying a new driver can be a cool experience for many players. The excitement of taking your new purchase to the course for the first time and showing your golfing mates is a bit a thrill for many.

Will a new driver increase the distance my ball goes?

New modern drivers have continued to increase their distance. Manufacturers are constantly researching new technologies to help with extra distance. If you have a driver in your golf bag from the early 2000s, we recommend looking to buy a new one as you could be looking at hitting up to 20+ yards longer. Drop into a store to test and see for yourself.

Is a shorter driver easier to hit?

A shorter driver tends to be easier to hit as you are closer to the ball while striking. This therefore makes it easier to hit the center of the clubface with a shorter club in comparison to a longer club.It is important to determine what the optimum driver length is for you. To figure this out you need to look at where you hit the ball on the face of your driver. If your hits are mostly towards the heel, your driver is too long. Another possibility is that the shaft is too light. Making these corrections can improve your strike tremendously.
